Porthleven's harbour sits beside Cornwall's best-known south-coast reef. The wave is compelling to watch and belongs in a guide, but it is not a general-access surf spot.

How the beach surfs

The reef needs a solid south-westerly swell and favourable wind to work. It then produces a fast, powerful wave over shallow rock, with a committed entry and exit. This is an expert venue where local knowledge, fitness and precise positioning matter.

Access and orientation

Watch from the harbour or coast before considering the water. The village has public parking, but the surf access itself is rocky and conditions can change quickly around the harbour walls.
